Country

Bangladesh

Bangladesh has achieved remarkable progress in maternal and newborn health despite resource constraints. With a maternal mortality ratio of approximately 123.0 deaths per 100,000 live births (down from 569 in 1990) and a neonatal mortality rate of approximately 17.4 deaths per 1,000 live births, the country is recognized as a global success story in improving birth outcomes. Skilled birth attendance has increased dramatically to approximately 59%, though this remains lower than regional averages. Bangladesh's success stems from innovative approaches including the world's largest cadre of community health workers, strong NGO partnerships, and targeted interventions for vulnerable populations. The country continues to address challenges with emergency obstetric care availability, particularly in rural areas, and improving the quality of facility-based deliveries. Climate change poses growing threats to maternal health infrastructure, with frequent flooding in low-lying areas disrupting healthcare access. Recent efforts focus on reducing stillbirths and addressing persistent malnutrition among pregnant women.

Newborn survival is a global priority

Whether a newborn survives still greatly depends on where they are born. Over 90 percent of newborn deaths occur in Africa and Asia combined, while the risk for babies born in low-income countries is 11 times higher than babies born in high-income countries. Globally, survival rates are improving, but most countries are still falling short of the Sustainable Development Goal of less than 12 newborn deaths for every 1,000 live births.

HNN features data, resources, and knowledge from every country, as every country can be doing more to ensure newborn and maternal survival. Visit our Data page and search our database for more country-specific data.
