Our Database, formerly known as the Newborn Numbers, is one of the only databases to focus on newborn health-specific data.
HNN collects country-level data from global databases, surveys, and reports, bringing them together in one, easy-to-use database. Indicators are carefully chosen because they are either directly related to newborn health or are contextually relevant to newborn survival. These include maternal, adolescent, child, and sexual and reproductive health, as well as humanitarian, climate, nutrition and water, sanitation, and hygiene indicators. The database provides the latest global, country, and regional estimates to support government, program managers, policymakers, and stakeholders in planning health policy and program implementation.
All data presented on HNN can be found in our database, unless otherwise stated. HNN uses UNICEF reporting regional classifications to define regions in the database and website.

Child Mortality Estimates (CME Info) is a database containing the latest child mortality estimates based on the research of the UN Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation. Raw data inputs for country neonatal mortality estimates can be downloaded here, including the latest estimates, trend data, and methodology for neonatal mortality.
The USAID-funded DHS program provides technical assistance to countries to conduct surveys on population, health, HIV, and nutrition, advancing global understanding of health and population trends in developing countries. Reports, survey questionnaires, and related materials are available for downloading. The DHS website also includes STATcompiler, which provides quick facts and country comparisons, allowing users to build customized tables from hundreds of DHS surveys and indicators.
Each year, The State of the World’s Children, UNICEF’s flagship publication, closely examines a key issue affecting children. The report includes supporting data and statistics that can be downloaded and is also available in French and Spanish. Childinfo contains UNICEF’s statistical information, including data used in UNICEF’s publications, The State of the World’s Children and Progress for Children. In addition, Childinfo holds technical resources for conducting UNICEF-supported Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS), a major source of global development data.
Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey: UNICEF assists countries in collecting and analyzing data in order to fill data gaps for monitoring the situation of children and women through its international household survey initiative the Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS).
Countdown to 2030 is a collaboration of academics from global, regional, country institutions, UN agencies and World Bank and civil society organizations, to track progress of life-saving interventions for Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health and Nutrition (RMNCAH+N). Countdown generates evidence to foster advocacy and accountability for women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health. In 2016, the Countdown to 2030 Initiative adapted its strategies and approaches to align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and particularly the Global Strategy for Women’s Children’s and Adolescents’ Health 2016-2030.
The UNICEF Report on the global burden of stillbirths
In 2023, Never Forgotten: The situation of stillbirth around the globe, was released, updating the first-ever stillbirth report released by the UN Inter-Agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (UN-IGME). It is a critical document, highlighting the importance of data globally and driving political and public recognition of the issue. The report finds that despite progress being made since 2000, stillbirths have not declined as rapidly as maternal and newborn mortality, and if current trends continue, an additional 13.2 million stillbirths will take place before 2030.
Born too soon: decade of action on preterm birth, released in 2023, is a follow up to the original, groundbreaking Born too soon report in 2013. It “looks to the future, setting an ambitious agenda to reduce the burden of preterm birth by addressing factors outside of the health system that affect preterm birth; and, within health systems, by providing high-quality, respectful care for women and babies so that they can survive and thrive, no matter where they are born.”
This report is intended to inspire and support country-led action: politicians, policy-makers and leaders of all stakeholder groups are its primary audience. However, leadership “from the top” often emerges in response to a unified call to action by a broad-based coalition of committed advocates “from the bottom”.
The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) unites the efforts of 11 UN organizations — UNHCR, UNICEF, WFP, UNDP, UNFPA, UNODC, UN Women, ILO, UNESCO, WHO and the World Bank – to end the AIDS epidemic globally by 2030. Through data collection, advocacy, and strategic direction, UNAIDS is the leading voice in the global HIV/AIDS community. Their annual report shapes research and programmatic agendas, and their data is featured in policies, journals, and reports worldwide.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) brings the world together to tackle humanitarian emergencies and save the lives of people caught in crises. OCHA serves as the global advocate for humanitarian emergencies and crises, coordinating with government and non-governmental partners to respond to crises effectively. They identify gaps in humanitarian funding and elevate financial needs through the annual Global Humanitarian Overview, ensuring global action and prioritization.
